The purpose of the African American Graduate Student Association (AAGSA) serves as a source of social and emotional support for black graduate students and to actively promote the interests of black graduate students. In addition, AAGSA will serve to promote the retention of black graduate students and increase minority representation on the campus of The University of Alabama.

The mission of AAGSA is to advance the scholarly activities of African American graduate students and to be a vehicle for positive social change. AAGSA seeks to fulfill this purpose through social, academic, service, and cultural exchanges.

The objectives of the AAGSA are:

  • To serve as a support system and networking organization for African American students.

  • To assist current students and prospective students by providing information and resources vital to success at the University of Alabama.

  • To encourage attitudes of professionalism and academic excellence among all members.

  • To provide a structured organization through which graduate students can offer support and service to the University of Alabama and surrounding communities.

  • To work with other University of Alabama organizations to assure the creation of an institutional environment that fosters students’ full personal, academic, and professional development.

  • To work with administration and other University of Alabama organizations to assure that issues of cultural exchange, diversity, and social change are explored.
